Quran

"Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]. Upon the father is the mothers' provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable."

Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:233

Establishes the natural framework for infant feeding and maternal nutrition, both critical factors in preventing and managing infant colic through proper breastfeeding practices and maternal dietary adequacy.

"And We had prevented from him [all] wet nurses before, so she said, 'Shall I direct you to a household that will be responsible for him for you while they are to him [for his upbringing] sincere?'"

Surah Al-Qasas · 28:12

Demonstrates the recognition of infant feeding difficulties and the importance of compatible nursing, as incompatible milk or wet nurse can contribute to digestive distress and colic in infants.

Sahih Hadith

"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Look carefully at who nurses your children, for the child resembles the wet nurse.'"

Sunan Abi Dawud · 5098HasanNarrator: Abu Hurairah

Emphasizes careful selection of wet nurses and attention to nursing quality, as poor milk quality or incompatible nursing can directly cause infant digestive disturbances including colic.

"Asma bint Abi Bakr said: 'I conceived Abdullah bin Az-Zubair, then I came to Madinah and gave birth to him at Quba. Then I brought him to the Prophet (peace be upon him) who placed him in his lap, then called for a date, chewed it, then put his saliva in his mouth, so the first thing that entered his stomach was the saliva of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).'"

Musnad Ahmad · 26760HasanNarrator: Asma bint Abi Bakr

Demonstrates the Prophetic practice of Tahnik with pre-masticated dates for newborns, a gentle introduction to feeding that helps prepare the infant digestive system and may prevent colic through gradual acclimatization.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī

Ibn al-Qayyim, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Section on Nursing and Infant Care - discusses importance of maternal diet affecting milk quality and infant digestion; recommends warming carminative foods (cumin, anise, fennel) for nursing mothers to prevent infant colic, and gentle tahnik practice to prepare infant digestive system.
