"We have certainly created man in the best of stature."
Surah At-Tin · 95:4
This verse establishes the principle that the human digestive system was created in perfect balance, and chronic constipation represents a disruption of the natural eliminative functions that require restoration through proper regimen.
"And We sent down from the sky water in due measure and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away. And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines; for you therein are abundant fruits and from them you eat. And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat."
Surah Al-Mu'minun · 23:18-20
The olive tree mentioned produces olive oil, which classical scholars recognized as a laxative and intestinal lubricant specifically beneficial for chronic constipation and dry bowel syndrome.
"You must use senna and sanoot (cumin), for in them is healing for every disease except as-sam (death). It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is as-sam?' He said: 'Death.'"
Sunan Ibn Majah · 3457SahihNarrator: Umm Salama
This hadith specifically mentions senna (sanā), which has been the primary prophetic remedy for chronic constipation throughout Islamic medical history due to its potent laxative properties.
"The Messenger of Allah asked [Asma]: 'What do you use as a laxative?' She said: 'Shubrum (spurge).' He said: 'Hot, too hot!' She then said: 'I used senna as a laxative,' and the Prophet said: 'If anything were to contain a cure for death, it would be senna.'"
Sunan Abi Dawud · 3834HasanNarrator: Asma bint Umays
This hadith directly addresses the treatment of constipation (istimsha), with the Prophet specifically recommending senna over harsher purgatives for chronic bowel irregularity.
"Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree."
Sahih Muslim · 2052SahihNarrator: Abu Hurayrah
Olive oil consumption is a prophetic remedy that classical physicians applied specifically to chronic constipation as it lubricates the intestines and softens hardened stools.

Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 9 (Diseases of the Digestive Organs), Chapter on Constipation of the Bowels (Ihtibās al-Tabt') — Ibn Sina classifies chronic constipation according to humoral predominance (hot-dry or cold-dry), recommending gentle lubricants (olive oil, sweet almond oil) for dry types, and mild laxatives (senna, prunes, figs) combined with abdominal massage and increased fluid intake.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Senna (Al-Sanā wa al-Sanoot) — Ibn al-Qayyim explains the Prophet's emphasis on senna as the premier laxative, describing it as hot and dry in the second degree, effective for evacuating black bile and phlegm that cause chronic constipation, and recommends combining it with sanoot (cumin) to reduce griping and enhance its action on stubborn bowel blockage.
