"Who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks? Then return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued."
Surah Al-Mulk · 67:3-4
Classical commentators connected persistent physiological strain (like chronic cough's repetitive forceful expulsion) to the concept of hasīr (exhaustion from repeated action), reflecting the body's pulmonary fatigue in prolonged respiratory disease.
"Use this Indian costus (al-'ūd al-hindī), for it contains seven types of healing, including [treatment for] pleurisy (dhāt al-janb)."
Sunan Abi Dawud · 3855HasanNarrator: Umm Qays bint Mihsan
Classical physicians including Ibn Sina classified chronic cough under chest diseases related to dhāt al-janb and respiratory inflammations, making costus a specific prophetic remedy for persistent pulmonary conditions.
"Indeed, among the best things with which you treat yourselves are cupping (hijāmah) and costus (al-qusṭ al-baḥrī)."
Sunan Ibn Majah · 3461HasanNarrator: Anas ibn Malik
Costus (both Indian and marine varieties) was specifically employed in classical Tibb for clearing phlegm and treating productive chronic cough by warming and drying excess moisture in the respiratory passages.
Classical Medical Sources
Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 9 (Diseases of the Respiratory Organs), Chapter on Cough (al-Su'āl) — He distinguishes chronic cough (su'āl muzmin) by duration and underlying causes (hot/cold, dry/moist humors), prescribing expectorants like fenugreek for moist cough, and demulcents like almond oil for dry chronic cough, with specific compound syrups.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Pleurisy and Diseases of the Chest (Dhāt al-Janb wa Amrāḍ al-Ṣadr) — He emphasizes costus (both varieties) and cupping for chronic respiratory ailments, explaining that persistent cough arises from cold phlegm or hot inflammation requiring humoral rebalancing through prophetic remedies.
