Quran

"For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease."

Surah Ash-Sharh · 94:5-6

This verse addresses the core cognitive distortion in depression—the belief that difficulty is permanent—by affirming that relief accompanies hardship, offering hope to the despairing heart.

"And despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people."

Surah Yusuf · 12:87

Directly prohibits ya's (despair), the spiritual dimension of depression, commanding the afflicted to maintain hope in divine mercy as an antidote to hopelessness.

"Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'"

Surah Az-Zumar · 39:53

Addresses guilt-driven depression and self-reproach by prohibiting qanut (despair) and affirming comprehensive divine forgiveness for those overwhelmed by perceived past failures.

Sahih Hadith

"How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for his affairs are all good, and this applies to no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience, and that is good for him."

Sahih Muslim · 2999SahihNarrator: Abu Hurairah

Provides cognitive reframing for the depressed believer by teaching that all circumstances contain potential benefit, countering the negative cognitive bias characteristic of depression.

"When the Prophet (ﷺ) was distressed, he would say: 'There is none worthy of worship except Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is none worthy of worship except Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is none worthy of worship except Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.'"

Jami at-Tirmidhi · 3479HasanNarrator: Ibn Abbas

Prophetic prescription specifically for karb (anguish/distress), the acute psychological constriction accompanying depressive episodes, using structured dhikr as therapeutic intervention.

"No one is afflicted with anxiety or grief (hamm wa huzn) and says: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my grief (jala' huzni) and a release for my anxiety (dhahab hammi),' except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief and replace it with relief."

Sunan Abi Dawud · 1525HasanNarrator: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

This supplication specifically targets hamm (anxiety) and huzn (grief/sorrow), the two classical Arabic terms denoting depressive symptoms, prescribing it as direct prophetic treatment for these states.

Classical Medical Sources

Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb

Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 1 (Diseases of the Brain), Chapter on Malankhuliya (Melancholia): Ibn Sina describes depression (al-ghamm wa al-huzn al-mustamirr) as arising from excess black bile (sawda') affecting the brain, treated through dietary modification toward moistening foods, reduction of solitude, musical therapy (sama'), pleasant fragrances, and medications like buzoori and oxymel of squill to purge the black bile.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Treatment of Grief and Sorrow (Fi 'Ilaj al-Hamm wa al-Huzn): Ibn al-Qayyim distinguishes between natural grief requiring sabr and pathological huzn requiring treatment through dhikr (especially tawhid formulas), dua (the supplication of hamm wa huzn), talbinah, maintaining wudu, prayer, recitation of al-Mu'awwidhat, and avoiding isolation while seeking righteous companionship.
