Quran

"O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy."

Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:168

Emphasizes consuming only pure and wholesome food, as contaminated or spoiled food is a primary cause of acute diarrhea and gastrointestinal disturbances.

"And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines; for you therein are abundant fruits and from them you eat. And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat."

Surah Al-Mu'minun · 23:19-20

References olive oil which Ibn Sina and classical physicians prescribed for digestive disorders including diarrhea due to its binding and soothing properties for the intestinal tract.

Sahih Hadith

"The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Use senna and sanoot, for they contain healing for every disease except death.' It was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is as-saam?' He said: 'Death.'"

Sunan Ibn Majah · 3457HasanNarrator: Umm Sulaym

Senna (sanā) is specifically mentioned for gastrointestinal regulation and was used by classical physicians to treat both constipation and paradoxically to cleanse the bowels in certain types of diarrhea caused by retained putrid matter.

"Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked his family for condiment. They said: 'We have nothing but vinegar.' He asked for it and began to eat with it, saying: 'Vinegar is an excellent condiment.'"

Sahih Muslim · 2048SahihNarrator: Jabir ibn Abdullah

Vinegar (khall) was used in classical Islamic medicine as an astringent to bind the bowels and reduce excessive watery discharge in acute diarrhea cases.

"Aisha used to recommend talbina (barley broth) for the sick and for those grieving over the dead. She said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Talbina soothes the heart of the sick person and relieves some of his grief.'"

Sahih al-Bukhari · 5445SahihNarrator: Aisha

Talbina (barley water) is specifically indicated for diarrhea as it provides gentle nutrition, soothes inflamed intestinal mucosa, and helps restore fluid balance without irritating the digestive tract.

Classical Medical Sources

Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb

Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 11, Chapter on Diarrhea (Ishāl) — Ibn Sina differentiates types of diarrhea by humor (bilious, phlegmatic, bloody) and recommends astringents like pomegranate rind, quince, and sumac, combined with demulcents like barley water to protect intestinal lining while binding stools; he emphasizes rehydration with boiled water and avoiding heavy foods.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Vinegar (Al-Khall) and Chapter on Talbina — He describes vinegar's astringent properties for binding loose bowels and cooling excess heat causing diarrhea, and recommends talbina (barley broth) for its soothing, nourishing quality that restores strength without irritating inflamed intestines; he also mentions the importance of dietary rest and light foods.
