"And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.'"
Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:222
This verse acknowledges menstrual bleeding as adhā (harm/distress), directly relevant to endometriosis which causes abnormal menstrual bleeding, severe dysmenorrhea, and pelvic pain requiring medical attention and purification considerations.
"Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]."
Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:233
Endometriosis is a major cause of female infertility and complications in pregnancy, making verses addressing motherhood and childbearing contextually significant to the condition's impact on reproductive capacity.
Sahih Hadith
"Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh had abnormal vaginal bleeding (istihada). She asked the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said: 'That is from a blood vessel and not menstruation. So when the menses begins, stop praying, and when it ends, wash the blood off yourself and pray.'"
Sahih al-Bukhari · 294SahihNarrator: Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh
This hadith directly addresses istihada (abnormal uterine bleeding between periods), a cardinal symptom of endometriosis involving bleeding from displaced endometrial tissue and distinguishing it from normal menstruation.
"Hamnah bint Jahsh said: 'I had very heavy prolonged bleeding, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to consult him and inform him. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I suffer from very heavy prolonged bleeding. What do you command me about it? It has prevented me from fasting and prayer. He said: I suggest you use cotton padding (kursuf), for it removes blood. She said: It is too copious for that.'"
Sunan Abi Dawud · 307SahihNarrator: Hamnah bint Jahsh
This hadith addresses severe abnormal uterine bleeding requiring intervention, directly parallel to menorrhagia and heavy bleeding characteristic of endometriosis, and the Prophet's recommendation of absorbent cotton demonstrates early gynecological treatment.
Classical Medical Sources
Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 21 (Diseases of the Uterus), Chapter on Excessive Menstruation (Kathrat al-Tams) and Chapter on Uterine Pain (Waja' al-Rahim) — Ibn Sina discusses abnormal bleeding from uterine tissue, recommends astringents, cooling poultices, regulation of humors, and addresses associated infertility with warming and strengthening uterine remedies including fenugreek and costus.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah does not specifically address endometriosis as a distinct entity in At-Tibb an-Nabawi, as classical scholars categorized such presentations under istihada (abnormal bleeding), 'usr al-hayd (difficult menstruation), and 'uqr (barrenness); treatments emphasized regulating menstrual flow and strengthening the uterus with prophetic remedies.
