"Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, From the evil of that which He created, And from the evil of darkness when it settles, And from the evil of the blowers in knots, And from the evil of an envier when he envies.'"
Surah Al-Falaq · 113:1-5
This surah is the primary Quranic protection against the evil eye (hasad/envy), explicitly mentioning the envier and prescribed for Ruqyah treatment of Al-Ayn.
"And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, 'Indeed, he is mad.'"
Surah Al-Qalam · 68:51
This verse explicitly confirms the reality of harm caused by envious looks (Al-Ayn), demonstrating that the disbelievers nearly harmed the Prophet ﷺ with their gazes.
"And he said, 'O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allah at all. The decision is only for Allah; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely.'"
Surah Yusuf · 12:67
Prophet Ya'qub's instruction to his sons demonstrates prophetic acknowledgment and preventive measures against Al-Ayn, advising them to avoid drawing attention that could invite envious glances.
Sahih Hadith
"The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn and say: 'Your father [Ibrahim] used to seek refuge with these words for Isma'il and Ishaq: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye (ayn lammah).'"
Sahih Muslim · 2188SahihNarrator: Ibn Abbas
This hadith provides the specific Prophetic supplication (du'a) for protection against Al-Ayn, demonstrating the practice passed down from Prophet Ibrahim through the generations.
أَمَرَنِي النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَوْ أَمَرَ أَنْ يُسْتَرْقَى مِنَ الْعَيْنِ
"The Prophet ﷺ commanded me, or commanded that Ruqyah should be used for Al-Ayn (the evil eye)."
Sahih Muslim · 2197aSahihNarrator: Aishah
This hadith establishes the Prophetic command specifically for treating Al-Ayn with Ruqyah, distinguishing it as a recognized and treatable spiritual affliction.
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek protection from the jinn and from the evil eye of humans until the Mu'awwidhataan (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) were revealed. When they were revealed, he held to them and left everything else."
Sahih Muslim · 2197cSahihNarrator: Abu Sa'id
This hadith establishes that Al-Ayn from humans was specifically recognized by the Prophet ﷺ and that the final revelation for its treatment was the two protective surahs.
Classical Medical Sources
Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina does not dedicate specific chapters to Al-Ayn as a spiritual affliction in Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, as his work focuses primarily on physical pathology; however, he acknowledges psychological influences on health in Book 1 (General Principles) when discussing non-naturals affecting temperament.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on 'Al-Ayn wa Ahkamuha wa Dawauha' (The Evil Eye, Its Rulings and Cure) — provides comprehensive discussion of the reality of Al-Ayn according to Islamic texts, its effects on the body and soul, and specific Prophetic treatments including bathing with the water of the one who afflicted the eye, Ruqyah with Quranic verses, and preventive supplications.
