Quran

"So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts."

Surah Al-Hajj · 22:46

This verse establishes the heart's anatomical location within the chest (sadr) and its vital function, foundational to understanding cardiac pathology in Islamic medicine.

"When Allah showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter, but Allah saved you. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts."

Surah Al-Anfal · 8:43

References cardiac courage and the physiological connection between emotional stress and chest (cardiac) response, relevant to coronary stress factors.

"When they came at you from above you and from below you, and when eyes shifted and hearts reached the throats and you assumed about Allah assumptions."

Surah Al-Ahzab · 33:10

Describes acute cardiac distress syndrome with hearts reaching throats, indicating severe cardiac stress response recognized in classical Islamic cardiology.

Sahih Hadith

"Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes sound, the whole body becomes sound, but if it gets spoilt, the whole body gets spoilt, and that is the heart."

Sahih Muslim · 2564SahihNarrator: Abu Huraira

This hadith establishes the heart as the central organ whose soundness determines whole-body health, foundational to understanding coronary disease's systemic effects.

"Do not force your sick to eat and drink, for Allah feeds them and gives them drink."

Sunan Abi Dawud · 3855HasanNarrator: Umm al-Mundhir

This guidance is particularly relevant for cardiac patients who may experience reduced appetite due to heart failure or medication, indicating rest for the cardiovascular system.

"Indeed Allah loves to see the trace of His blessing upon His servant."

Jami at-Tirmidhi · 2380HasanNarrator: Abu Dharr

Classical scholars connected this to maintaining physical strength and proper nutrition to support cardiac function, avoiding excessive austerity that weakens the heart.

Classical Medical Sources

Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 8, Chapter on 'Diseases of the Heart (Amrad al-Qalb)' - He categorizes cardiac diseases by temperament imbalances, discusses palpitations (khafaqan), cardiac pain, and weak heart action, recommending cardiotonic drugs like saffron, rose water, and compounds to strengthen cardiac pneuma (ruh).

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on 'The Heart and Its Diseases' - He emphasizes the dual nature of cardiac health (spiritual and physical), noting that spiritual heart disease manifests physically, and recommends moderation in eating, avoiding anger and grief, and using gentle cardiac tonics like rose and saffron.
