"Have you seen the water that you drink? Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?"
Surah Al-Waqi'ah · 56:68-70
This verse emphasizes water quality and its potential alteration to bitter (ujāj), which classical physicians linked to mineral concentration and stone formation in the kidneys when water quality is poor.
"And We sent down from the sky water in measure and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away. And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat. And [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food for those who eat."
Surah Al-Mu'minun · 23:18-20
Classical Islamic physicians noted olive oil from this blessed tree as a remedy for dissolving urinary stones and facilitating their passage through lubrication of urinary passages.
Sahih Hadith
"The Messenger of Allah asked her: 'What do you use as a laxative?' She said: 'Shubrum (spurge).' He said: 'Hot, hot.' She said: 'Then I used senna.' The Prophet said: 'If there was anything that could cure death, it would be senna.'"
Sunan Ibn Majah · 3449HasanNarrator: Asma bint Umays
Senna (sanā) was prescribed by classical physicians including Ibn Sina for kidney stones as it purges thick humors and prevents stone formation through its purgative action on bile and phlegm.
"For every disease there is a cure, and when the right cure is applied to the disease, it is healed by Allah's permission."
Sahih Muslim · 2216SahihNarrator: Jabir ibn Abdullah
This hadith establishes the Islamic medical principle that kidney stones, like all diseases, have specific remedies discoverable through medical investigation, guiding the search for litholytic treatments.
Classical Medical Sources
Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 9, Chapter on Kidney and Bladder Stones (Al-Ḥaṣā fī al-Kulyatayn wa al-Mathāna) — Ibn Sina categorizes stones by humoral composition (hot/cold, moist/dry) and prescribes diuretics like parsley seed, watermelon seed, and celery seed to dissolve stones, combined with emollients like olive oil and sweet almond oil to facilitate passage, while cautioning against astringent and binding foods.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Diuretics and Treatment of Urinary Retention (Al-Mubawwilāt wa 'Ilāj 'Usr al-Bawl) — Ibn al-Qayyim discusses prophetic guidance on maintaining urinary flow through adequate hydration, use of gentle diuretics like cucumber and melon seeds, and purgation with senna to prevent accumulation of stone-forming substances, emphasizing that prevention through dietary moderation is superior to treatment.
