"And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers."
Surah An-Nahl · 16:66
This verse describes milk as naturally palatable (sā'ighān), establishing that milk digestion difficulty reflects individual constitutional variation rather than milk being inherently problematic.
"And indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat."
Surah Al-Mu'minun · 23:21
This verse acknowledges that livestock provide drink (milk) with benefits, implying individual differences in capacity to benefit from milk products.
Sahih Hadith
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to breathe three times while drinking and would say: 'It is more wholesome, thirst-quenching and healthier.'"
Sahih Muslim · 2965SahihNarrator: Anas ibn Malik
The practice of drinking milk or liquids in intervals with pauses may aid those with lactose intolerance by slowing lactose delivery to the intestine, reducing digestive burden.
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُحِبُّ الدُّبَّاءَ
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to like gourd (dubba/pumpkin)."
Sunan Abi Dawud · 3729HasanNarrator: Abdullah ibn Abbas
Gourd is a digestive aid that reduces gas and bloating, making it beneficial when consumed alongside dairy for those with lactose sensitivity.
Classical Medical Sources
Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 11 (Diseases of the Intestines), discussing milk intolerance: states that some temperaments lack sufficient digestive heat to transform milk properly, leading to bloating and diarrhea; recommends fermented milk products, adding warming spices to milk, or avoiding fresh milk entirely in favor of aged cheeses.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Foods and Their Properties: discusses milk as varying in digestibility based on animal source and individual constitution; recommends camel milk or fermented products for those with weak digestion, and consuming carminative herbs (cumin, anise) alongside dairy.
