Exhaustive Revelation

Quran

"And [subsequently] the king said, 'Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions.' They said, '[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams.'"

Surah Yusuf · 12:43-44

This verse discusses disturbing dreams (aḍghāthu aḥlām) as confused or false dreams that trouble the mind, directly addressing the nature of nightmares as disordered mental imagery during sleep.

"The greatest terror will not grieve them, and the angels will meet them, [saying], 'This is your Day which you have been promised.'"

Surah Al-Anbya · 21:103

This verse addresses the concept of faza' (sudden terror/fright) which Islamic scholars relate to night terrors, indicating divine protection from overwhelming fear for the righteous.

"He said, 'O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.'"

Surah Yusuf · 12:5

This verse acknowledges the reality of meaningful dreams while warning of satanic interference in dream states, foundational to understanding nightmares as potentially having a spiritual dimension from Satan's enmity.

Sahih Hadith

"A good vision is from Allah and a bad dream (hulm) is from Satan. So if anyone of you sees a bad dream which he dislikes, he should spit on his left side three times and seek refuge with Allah from its evil, for then it will not harm him."

Sahih Muslim · 2261SahihNarrator: Abu Qatadah

This hadith specifically addresses nightmares (hulm), providing the prophetic protocol for dealing with disturbing dreams through spitting thrice to the left and seeking refuge in Allah.

"If anyone of you sees a dream that he likes, then it is from Allah, and he should thank Allah for it and narrate it to others; but if he sees something else, i.e., a bad dream which he dislikes, then it is from Satan, and he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil, and he should not mention it to anybody, for it will not harm him."

Sahih al-Bukhari · 3292SahihNarrator: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri

This hadith provides specific instructions for managing nightmares: do not relate them to anyone, seek refuge from their evil, recognizing them as satanic disturbances that lose power when not discussed.

"When one of you sees a dream which he dislikes, he should spit on his left side three times, seek refuge in Allah from Satan three times, and turn over from the side on which he was sleeping."

Sunan Abi Dawud · 5042SahihNarrator: Jabir

This hadith adds the specific remedy of changing sleeping position after a nightmare, indicating that physical posture during sleep may contribute to recurring disturbing dreams.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Dreams and Their Types (Bab fi al-Ru'ya wa Aqsamiha) - Ibn al-Qayyim classifies dreams into three types: true visions from Allah, self-talk of the soul, and satanic nightmares, prescribing the prophetic remedies of seeking refuge, spitting to the left, changing position, and maintaining spiritual purity through dhikr and wudu before sleep.
