"O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy."
Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:168
Emphasizes eating what is tayyib (wholesome/pure), which classical scholars interpreted as avoiding foods that corrupt the stomach's temperament and cause ulceration through harmful qualities.
"O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed, I, of what you do, am Knowing."
Surah Al-Mu'minun · 23:51
Classical physicians linked dietary purity (tayyibat) to digestive health, noting that harmful foods damage the stomach lining and create the conditions for qurḥa (ulceration).
"There is a remedy for every disease. When the remedy is applied to the disease, it is cured with the permission of Allah, the Exalted."
Sahih Muslim · 2052SahihNarrator: Jabir ibn Abdullah
Ibn Sina applies this principle to stomach ulcers, emphasizing precise identification of temperamental imbalance causing the ulceration before selecting the appropriate cooling and healing remedies.
"The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Asma: 'What do you use as a purgative?' She said: 'Shubrum.' He said: 'Hot and violent.' She said: 'Then I used senna.' The Prophet said: 'If anything could save from death, it would be senna.'"
Sunan Ibn Majah · 3457HasanNarrator: Asma bint Umays
Classical physicians used gentle senna to evacuate bile and corrupted humors from the digestive tract in peptic ulcer treatment, avoiding harsh purgatives that could aggravate ulceration.
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) visited me with Ali, who was recovering from illness. We had some dates hanging. The Prophet began to eat, and Ali got up to eat. The Prophet said to Ali: 'Stop! You are recovering.' Then she gave him barley and silq (chard), and he said to Ali: 'Eat some of this.'"
Sunan Abi Dawud · 3857SahihNarrator: Umm Mundhir
This hadith establishes the principle of gentle, cooling foods like barley for damaged stomachs, avoiding harsh foods; barley water was specifically prescribed for gastric ulceration in classical Tibb.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Section on Stomach Ailments and their Prophetic Treatments - He emphasizes dietary modification as primary treatment, recommending gentle foods like dates, barley preparations, and olive oil while cautioning against bile-producing foods and psychological stress (ghamm) that inflames the stomach's temperament.
