Quran

"Say, 'I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, From the evil of that which He created, And from the evil of darkness when it settles, And from the evil of the blowers in knots, And from the evil of an envier when he envies.'"

Surah Al-Falaq · 113:1-5

This surah explicitly addresses protection from sihr through seeking refuge from those who blow on knots, a direct reference to sorcery practices.

"And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, 'We are a trial, so do not disbelieve.' And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah."

Surah Al-Baqarah · 2:102

This verse describes the reality and nature of sihr, its sources, and establishes that its harm occurs only by Allah's permission, providing theological foundation for protection.

"So when they had thrown, Moses said, 'What you have brought is [only] magic. Indeed, Allah will expose its worthlessness. Indeed, Allah does not amend the work of corrupters. And Allah will establish the truth by His words, even if the criminals dislike it.'"

Surah Yunus · 10:81-82

These verses establish that Allah nullifies sihr and demonstrate Prophet Musa's confrontation with sorcerers, affirming that truth from Allah overcomes all magic.

Sahih Hadith

"Allah's Messenger was bewitched so that he used to think that he had done something which in fact he had not done. One day he invoked (Allah) for a long period and then said, 'I feel that Allah has inspired me as to how to cure myself. Two men came to me (in a dream) and sat, one by my head and the other by my feet. One of them asked, "What is the ailment of this man?" The other replied, "He has been bewitched." The first asked, "Who has bewitched him?" The other replied, "Labid bin A'sam.""

Sahih al-Bukhari · 5766SahihNarrator: Aisha

This hadith documents the actual occurrence of sihr affecting the Prophet and establishes the legitimacy of seeking treatment for bewitchment through spiritual means.

"I asked Allah's Messenger about an-Nushrah (a type of treatment to undo sihr), and he said, 'It is the work of Satan.'"

Sahih Muslim · 2192SahihNarrator: Jabir

This hadith addresses the specific practice of treating sihr with prohibited methods, establishing that treatment must be through permissible Quranic and prophetic means only.

"Whoever ties a knot and blows on it has practiced magic, and whoever practices magic has committed shirk, and whoever hangs up something (as an amulet) will be entrusted to it."

Sunan Abi Dawud · 3883SahihNarrator: Abu Hurayrah

This hadith defines the prohibited practice of sihr through knot-tying and blowing, and warns against using talismans, guiding toward proper prophetic protection methods.

Classical Medical Sources

Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb

Ibn Sina does not address sihr as a spiritual entity in Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, as his work focuses on naturalistic medical conditions; he discusses psychological delusions and melancholic hallucinations in Book 3, Fann 1, on diseases of the brain, which medieval physicians sometimes conflated with bewitchment symptoms.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Sihr (Magic) and its Treatment through Quranic Recitation and Prophetic Supplications - he affirms sihr's reality, documents the Prophet's own bewitchment, and prescribes treatment exclusively through Quranic verses (especially Al-Mu'awwidhatayn), authentic supplications, and the use of sidr leaves with recitation.
