"And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection."
Surah Al-Furqan · 25:47
This verse establishes sleep as a divinely ordained state of rest (subat), emphasizing the natural function of uninterrupted breathing and restoration during sleep which is disrupted in sleep apnea.
"Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term."
Surah Az-Zumar · 39:42
This verse addresses the suspension of consciousness during sleep and the return of the soul, relevant to understanding the physiological cycle of breathing and consciousness that becomes pathological in sleep apnea episodes.
"When he woke up, he said: 'Indeed Allah seized your souls when He willed and returned them when He willed.'"
Sahih al-Bukhari · 247SahihNarrator: Abu Qatadah
This hadith describes the Prophet's explanation of the cessation and restoration of vital functions during sleep, applicable to understanding the pathophysiology of breathing interruption in sleep apnea.
"When you go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie down on your right side."
Sahih Muslim · 2714SahihNarrator: Al-Bara ibn Azib
The Prophet's instruction to sleep on the right side has relevance to sleep apnea as lateral sleeping positions can reduce airway obstruction compared to supine sleep.
