"O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth."
Surah Al-Ahzab · 33:53
This verse addresses natural shyness (haya') in social situations and distinguishes healthy modesty from pathological social avoidance, affirming that even the Prophet experienced discomfort in certain social contexts.
"Then one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, 'Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered [our flocks] for us.'"
Surah Al-Qasas · 28:25
Describes the daughter of Shu'ayb approaching Musa with modesty and shyness in a social encounter, providing a Quranic model of managing social anxiety while still fulfilling necessary social interaction.
"And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests."
Surah An-Nur · 24:31
Establishes protective boundaries in social situations that can reduce exposure anxiety, providing Islamic framework for managing discomfort in mixed social settings through modesty rather than complete avoidance.
"Verily Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your hearts and to your deeds."
Sahih Muslim · 2628SahihNarrator: Abu Huraira
Directly addresses the core fear in social anxiety—judgment by others based on appearance or performance—by redirecting focus from external evaluation to internal sincerity, relieving pressure of social scrutiny.
"Indeed some eloquence is magic, and some poetry is wisdom."
Jami at-Tirmidhi · 2012HasanNarrator: Abu Said al-Khudri
Acknowledges that not all people possess eloquence or verbal fluency, normalizing difficulty with speech performance and reducing shame associated with poor social verbal performance.
الْحَيَاءُ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ
"Modesty (Haya') is part of faith."
Sahih al-Bukhari · 6117SahihNarrator: Abu Huraira
Reframes social discomfort and shyness as a virtue when rooted in haya' rather than pathological fear, helping distinguish between healthy Islamic modesty and disordered social anxiety requiring treatment.
