"And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing. Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight."
Surah Al-A'raf · 7:200-201
Directly addresses intrusive thoughts (waswas) from Shaytan and the method of combating them through immediate refuge-seeking and remembrance.
"From the evil of the retreating whisperer - Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind - From among the jinn and mankind."
Surah An-Nas · 114:4-6
Explicitly names waswas (obsessive whispers) as a spiritual affliction requiring divine protection, central to understanding OCD's spiritual dimension.
"Satan comes to one of you and says, 'Who created so-and-so?' until he says, 'Who created your Lord?' So when he reaches that stage, he should seek refuge in Allah and desist (from such thoughts)."
Sahih Muslim · 134SahihNarrator: Abu Huraira
The Prophet specifically describes intrusive blasphemous thoughts and prescribes immediate refuge-seeking and thought-stopping, classic OCD management.
"A man came to the Prophet and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, one of us experiences something in himself which he would rather become charcoal than speak about it.' He said, 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Praise be to Allah who reduced his (Satan's) plot to mere waswasa (whispers).'"
Sahih Muslim · 132SahihNarrator: Ibn Abbas
The Prophet validates that extreme distress over intrusive thoughts is a sign of faith and that waswas remains only whispers without power if not acted upon.
"I came to the Prophet and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Satan intervenes between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing me.' The Messenger of Allah said, 'That is a devil called Khinzab. When you perceive him, seek refuge in Allah from him and spit on your left side three times.'"
Sunan Abi Dawud · 5112SahihNarrator: Uthman ibn Abi al-As
The Prophet prescribes a specific behavioral intervention (spitting left three times with refuge-seeking) for intrusive thoughts disrupting worship, addressing ritual compulsions.
Classical Medical Sources
Ibn Sīnā · Al-Qānūn fī al-Ṭibb
Ibn Sina, Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb, Book 3, Fann 1, Discourse 2, Chapter on Melancholia (Al-Malikhuliya) and Waswas - Ibn Sina discusses obsessive thoughts (waswas) as a form of melancholic disease arising from black bile affecting the brain's rational faculty, treating with purgatives, brain-cooling herbs like violet and poppy, and psychological reassurance to break thought patterns.
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah · Al-Ṭibb an-Nabawī
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, At-Tibb an-Nabawi, Chapter on Treatment of Waswas - Ibn al-Qayyim emphasizes that waswas is primarily a spiritual attack requiring firm conviction ('aqida), immediate refuge-seeking without mental engagement with doubts, and understanding that intrusive thoughts have no reality except what the sufferer grants them through attention and response.
